3 Minutes or Less – Life Lessons for America’s Greatest Writers
Three minutes might seem like a life time to many of us, but to some of the finest fiction writers, three minutes is just a creative entry into a glorious novel! This book is a compilation of short speeches given by many of America’s best writers at an evening gala. There are many characters, setting, problems, and creative solutions provided in these brief stories.
I was drawn to this book which I spied on a discount rack of a local book store when I saw authors’ names like Sendak, Blume, and Lehrer. Opening the book’s front cover, topics like Journeys, Beginnings, and Heroes instantly hooked my interest. I quickly took the book home and began to read the stories. But I soon realized that I had to do more that just read these stories, I had to present these stories, much like the authors did when they were on stage. Once I added this needed voice, the stories took on a life of their own.
Today, you’ll find this book near my bedside with folded corners and a well worn cover. I would not recommend this book to fourth or fifth grade students, but I would recommend other books filled with short stories. These include: Guys Read for Guys Write, Best Shorts: Favorite Stories for Sharing, and Scary Stories.

One of my new favorite books is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo. Edward is a china rabbit that belongs to a little girl. Edward gets separated from his owner and travels around the country looking for his home. The interesting thing about Edward is that he is alive, but he cannot move or talk, so nobody knows he is alive! I like how the author makes the book so emotional. There are some parts that are extremely happy, and some that made me cry because I felt so bad for Edward!

Mrs. Moore shared a nonfiction summarizing lesson with our class today. We summarized a section of our Illinois textbook about early native americans in Illinois. We learned to only pick out the key points and use our text features to do this.

I have read The Penderwicks. It is about a family who is going on vacation. They meet a boy named Jeffrey and his dad dies, so now he has a guardian named Mrs. Tifton. She is going to marry a mean man, and Jeffrey is trying to convince her not to marry him.

I read the book High School Musical by N.B. Grace and it is about high school students from East High.The friends have a great year but have a few troubles.They have very energetic talents and even very odd talents for teenagers.Although their friends feel weird about their talents all they do is express their self and keep their dreams going.Also,all the kids really are tring to do is be their selves and not to care what other people think.To the friends everyday it’s just a new adventure and this book couldn’t teach me any more about friendship.
Friendship and grades is all that really matters to these kids and all they want to do is their talents.

I also read the book The Kid in the Red Jacket by Barbara Park,and this
novel talks about an older boy that moves and ends up across the United States. I thought this book was funny and had a lot of plot twists in it so I hope you read and find out the plot twists.

I read a book called The War with Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith. This book is about a boy’s grandpa who is lonely because his wife died and comes to live with the boy. The boy was upset because the grandpa moved into his room, and then declared war! To find out what happened between the boy and the grandpa, read the book.

I just got done reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid.There are many problems in the bookbut the main one is Greg Heffly[a main character]tries to be everybody @ once.Because if you cheat on a test you arn’t gonna be able to back it up and also the teacher won’t know what you know 4 yourself.Also the sulition goes with the theme it is if you act like somewone else people won’t know you 4 the real you.The main characters are Greg ,Rodric & Rowly.

I have read Blood On the River. It takes place in the past when people just discovered America. Some Indians attack the English people and the English are running low on food supplies. You should read this book because it is full of drama and action!

A book I have read is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The author is Jeff Kinney.
The book is about a kid who has a couple of friends and he does a lot of funny stuff. This book makes me laugh and I enjoy it very much!!

I have recently read a book called Monsters and Villains of the Movies and Literature. This book mentions interesting facts about monsters and villains from books and movies throughout history. This book is really interesting and it always makes me smile! It also mentions scary creatures like the Deadly Triffid and the Headless Horseman!

Hi, I am reading a book called Flipped by Wendelin Draanen. It is sooo great! So far it is about a girl named Julianna and she has a huge crush on a boy named Bryce. Julianna is trying really hard to keep it a secret but I guess it doesn’t work like that. Bryce really has nothing to do with Julianna and just wants to be left alone. This book is on the top of my list and it will be on the top of yours to!!!!

the book I have just recently read is called blubber. Its aurther is judy blume.She is one of my faviotes book aurthors.Anyway i enjoy this book because at first all the kids in the book make fun of a girl named linda and they call her blubber. then at the end of the book they start making fun of their friend and her name is jill brenner and the nick name they made up for her was bb witch stands for baby brenner.I think this book will be very great to everyone that reads it because it is very interresting,sad,funny and risk taking for jill and her very good friend tracy. I have read Harry Potter #3. All of the wizards think that Sirius Black is a serial killer, and he escapes from Azcaban. In the end, Harry Potter and Sirius Black finally come face to face. Read the book to find out the twist at the end!

Hello! I read a ( in my words) FABULOUS book this year called Ida B. by if I can rember? Well, I know the last name was Han. – for the author. This book was about a lot of bad things happen to this little girl. But, the way Han wrote and described the feelings was just outstanding!There was a lot of similes and metaphores and a lot of twists in this book. Now I won’t tell you how it ends….but It truely does end…well let’s have you tell us! Now go check this book out and tell us what you thought…(in anothers person view, is what you could do!) Thanks!

I am reading a series called, Middleworld, it is about a ledgendary Mayan king who is belived to be immortal. An long time after a boy named Max finds himself involved in Mayan history like his parents who are archeoligists, he starts enjoying learning about the mayans until he learns this is not the past it is the present.

I was reding Because of Winn-Dixie. It’s about a preacher’s daughter and she finds Winn-Dixie in a store causing trouble so she brings him back to her house. Because of Winn-Dixie (Hence, the name of the book) she meets lots of people that become her friends in her new town. Towards the end, she and her new friends have a party. Winn-Dixie has a terrible fear of thunderstorms and turns up missing went a storm hits. It’s a great book and I encourage you to read it to find out the ending.

The book I am reading is Stormbreaker. I liked this book because I like mysteries. My favorite part is when Alex tries to escape from a guy named Blunt off a 100 ft roof. Another good part is when Alex has to steal a pc software at a foreign place. You should read this book to find out the whole adventure about Alex being a spy!

I”m reading the book THE RIFLE. I am only in the begning. It is about a man, and he needs a home. He only has a really old rifle. It is a very expensive. He wants a house, but he does not want to sell it. I guess you will have to read the book to find out what happens to the rifle.

I’m reading the book On the Banks of Plum Creak by Laura Ingles Wilder. It starts as Laura, Mary, Carrie, Ma, and Pa move out of indian teratory. They live by a creek in kansas. Laura and Mary love to play there. They live in a tiny dugout home but build a bigger one. Pa hasen’t raised crop yet and there not sure they can afored it. Then one day Pa said Laura and Mary must go to school. they don’t want to but have to. I recomend reading the book On the Banks of Plum Creek.

The book I am highly recomending is Stranded. It is about a girl who got hit by a car while riding her bike and now she only has one leg now which she calls stumpy. She struggles in her life, she feels different because she only has one leg. Completely like her dad she is in love wth the ocean. Every day she goes out there and on the way one day she finds a new exiting friend. If you love drama, adventure, or action this is your kind of book to read!! Enjoy!!!

I have currently read the book The Dollhouse Murders. A girl named Amy is visiting her Aunt Clare when she is there she finds a dollhouse hidden in the attic. She thinks it is the most beautiful thing ever. But the thing is after she finds out how her grandparents die weird things start happening to the dollhouse. This book is filled with mystery, excitment, and great friendships. I would definately reccomend this book to find out what happens in the end and all the mysteries throughout the book read it and let me know what you think.

The book I just read was Pleasing The Ghost , it is a really good and interesting book. It is about a little boy named Dennies, and ghost pop up in his room. One time his Uncle Arvie popped up in his room. His Uncle Arivie speaks a different language so Dennies has to figure out what his uncle is saying, and his uncle is also asking for 3 pleases. So find out more about thiis book.

The book I read was The Boxcar Children The Yellow House Mystery. It was about a family and all the characters named Benny, Violet, Henry, and Jessie and also Joe[their couisin] and his wife named Alice and one of the most important character is their grandfather named Mr. Alden. He takes care of them because their real parents died.But the story is about they found out about a guy named Bill and the money he needs to give Mr.Alden’s father!!!They find Bill and the money but I don’t want to say were! This book is really really good and I hope you read it very very soon!!!!!

If you like books that make you laugh and make you jump up silly then you should definetly read Wayside School Gets A little Stanger!! I’m reading Wayside School Gets a little Stranger!!! It really gets me hiped up when I read the book!!! Every chapter gets me engaged with the book. There is a series of books for Wayside School. I have read 2 of the books out of 3, but I’m now reading the third book which is Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger. In order to know the rest of the book you will have to read it!! If you ever want to get this book you will be very happy!!

Hi, Im readinding a book called Owls In The Office!!! So far it is aout 2 kids named Bryce and Mandy and they find a baby owl in the leaves. They took the baby owl to Mandys mother who is a vetrinarien. She told the children that they should have left th baby owl alone. Wow, i have just read a couple of FANTASTIC BOOKS called the City of Ember and its sequel, The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. The books really drew me in. I got the The City of Ember because I heard that a movie version was coming out, then i loved the book so much, i read the sequel! It stars Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet as they escape the city of Ember, they do it because the food supplies and energy resources are continuing to deplete, there were so many plot twists, it was CRAZY! I can’t tell you about the sequel, because doing so, I would spoil the previous installment. But trust me, they are some of the best books I’ve EVER READ! If you enjoy deciphering secret messages, plot twists, adventure you will TOTALLY LOVE THIS BOOK!

Deep and Dark and Dangerous
By – Mary Downing Hahn
Deep and Dark and Dangerous is a book about a 13-year-old girl, Ali is searching through her houses attic, looking for new books to read, while paging through a Nancy Drew mystery Ali finds a torn photogragh. In the picture there are three girls, but one of the girls on the end is mostly torn off; Ali recognizes two of the girls as her mother and her Aunt Dulcie. On the back it says: “Gull Cottage, 1977. Dulcie, Claire (her mother), and T-”. Then, when Aunt Dulcie comes for a visit with her daughter she tells them she’s fixed up old Gull Cottage, and is staying there for the summer. After some insults and arguments Ali’s mother, unwillingly, agrees to letting Ali go down to stay at the cottage over the summer; and there Ali meets Sissy, a mean, hating girl, who wants to wreck Ali’s summer, and Sissy has a secret, one that may have to do with the old photo… I highly reccomend this book for anyone likes suspenseful, creepy, cliff-hanger books in grades 4th (maybe 3rd) to even 8th graders. This book has a 5-star rating from me.

In the book Oggie Cooder, Oggie’s special talent is charving, which means carving cheese. Everyone at school wants to know how to charve. His school is having a talent show, and someone is planning to steal Oggie’s talent. This book is excellent and funny. I think you should read it!

I read a really good book called Jake Drake!!! Its a great book. First Jake talks about his mean Student Teacher, Miss Bruce. His real teacher Mrs. Brattle is helping in the libray for 3 weeks!!! When Mrs. Brattle leaves Miss Bruce tells them the rules!!! NO talking, NO wishpering and NO smileing!! Get it she says if you want to find out the rest read the book!’

I just finished a book called “Saving Fish From Drowning” by Amy Tan. Amy Tan is a Chinese-American who grew up in San Francisco. Her parents were immigrants from China, so she has experiences that are both Chinese and American.
The book takes place in a country called Myanmar, which is on the southwestern border of China. The country is ruled by the military and people do not have the rights and freedoms that we enjoy. A group of twelve American tourists are traveling through the country, where they see and experience things that are very different from America. Many of the people are very poor and some are hiding in the jungle because it isn’t safe for them anymore. The tourists are kidnapped and stuck in the jungle for almost a month. At first you think some dangerous rebels have taken them hostage, but the real reason they are taken is a surprise.
I was fascinated by how different life was for the people in Myanmar. It helped me to see the world through a different perspective. The author also used a creative narrator–the original tour guide who suddenly dies before the trip. She travels with the group as a spirit and tells their story. I would recommend this book to adults who like to travel to exotic places when they read.
My next book is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.

I just finished a book called, Hoot. It’s about a boy, Roy, who moved half-way across the country from Montana to Florida. There he meets a girl who has a step brother, Mullet Fingers, who showed him baby burrowing owls that were goimg to get traped in their burrows by buldoser for a new constrction site!! With the help of his new friends will they save the owls? Read the book and find out!!!!!!!!

I just got done reading the book The Green Glass Sea. In the book there is a girl named Dewey. Her dad keeps having to go to different places so Dewey stays with her nana because her mother ran away. So one day there were some people from the war that came and picked her up and said”you are going to be riding a train to Albuquerque New Mexico. When she got to Albuerque there were some more people from the war there to pick her up. So they drove to a place called the Hill and that was a place were alot of people from the war were to work on a gaget for world war 2.So about 30 minuets latter her dad showed up and she was so happy because that was the first time she had seen him in 6 months.Iloved that book and I think you would to.

I have read the Green Glass Sea. It is a very good book about World War Two. People were making something called the Gadget, which will change people’s lives forever! I hope you like this book. It is a great book, but there are sad times in the middle, and has a great ending!

In the book, Where The Red Fern Grows, a boy named Billy gets two dogs. He enters a coon hunting contest and he saved one of his dogs. Billy also enters a bet to hunt for a ghost coon. You will have to read the book to find out where the red fern grows!

I just got done reading this amazing book called The Rifle. In the book it is very hard to build a rifle with great accuracy. So on day will a gunsmith was going threw his wood he saw an awesome piece of wood so he started building a rifle with that piece of wood.When he was finshed with the rifle he decided to test it out so he went out to the woods and found a log he wallked one hundred yards away and and loded the rifel with gun powder a bullet and flint. then he shot the rifle.he didn’t walk up and see were he hit the wood heloaded it up two more times then he walked up and saw one hole not three then his first guess was that he hit it once and on the other two he missed, but when he pryed the wood open he found three bullets so then he said to himself” Ibuilt a rifle with great accuracy.So then he decided to be in the war. When he died they sold the rifle to one guy and then that guy sold it to another guy and on it went. I liked that book and I think you would to so if you see it in the library check it out.

I read the book The Lightning Thief.It was a really good book. The reason I liked it is because it was mystrey and action.There is a main charector named Percy and he is half-blooded.Anyway this book is about Percy and his friends,Annabeth,and Grover and they go on a quest because Zeus lost his lighting bolt and they suspect it is Percy but it wasn’t and so when they go try to find Zueses bolt and return it to him the come across alot of monsters and one of the monsters turned Percy’s mom into dust and he thinks she is dead but she is not.{Percy’s dad is the god of the seas}I cannot tell you if Percy finds the lightning bolt or if he sees his mom again.

I recently read the book Flush. It’s about a boy Named Noad and a girl named Abbey. Their dad was in jail for sinking a famous boat. After their dad was out of jail Noah and Abbey tried to get revenge on a guy who caused their dad to go to jail. I like this book because its action packed, funny and great for any grade.

Pok’emon!!!!!!! My book that I read was pok’emon vacation.Pok’emon vacation is about ash’s, brock’s, and misty’s pok’emon, Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squrtle, Togepi, Charizard, Onix, and Horsea and the bully’s [pok'emon bully's] with the evolved form of Pikachu, Richu as the leader of the bully’s and the book is also about friendship.
So if you want to read a good entertaining and kinda funny book get Pok’emon vacation!!!

The book I read is Suddenly Supernatural. It’s about a 12 year old girl who turns 13 and starts seeing the dead. Her mom sees the dead too. She finds a old school photo book with and a trapped spirit. She helps free the spirit and helps a freind too. Want to find out how, read it.

Hey. I have just read an awesome book, Sammy Keyes and the sisters of Mercy. In this amazing book Sammy Keyes has to serve detention at St. Mary’s church. While she is there Father Mayhew’s cross gets stoleen… the suspect is Sammy. She knows she didn’t do it but the question is who did. To find ot the akward twist at the end read the book. I just read a really good book called ” riding freedom” it is about a girl named Charlotte.she lives in an orphange and is th only girl. she loves the horses ther. Hayward and Vern are her only freinds there. they tret Charlotte diferent than the rest of them. Charlotte is so mad that she wants to run away. to find out why Charlotte wants to run away and if she dose read the book.

I am reading Diary of a wippy kid. Its about a boy named greg and his brother Rodrick. Rodrick bothers Greg all the time but,Maney causes all the trouble but, their parents won’t listen to Greg. Then they are on summer vacation and his dad comes and wake up him at 8:00. I think that it is a good book and I think you should read this book. Also it is a series so you can read all the books. If you like books that make you laugh until you can’t stop well then you’ll be in for a HILARIOUS book called, DEAR DUMB DIARY!!!! It’s about this girl who always writes this crazy and funny stuff in her diary. One of the things she writes in her diary is that she doesn’t like this girl named Angeline!! I mean REALLLLLLYYY!!!! But there so much stuff you will find in a diary that will make you want to laugh when you write in your diary! You will thinking about this book NON-STOP!! Hope you like this book of advice.

I have read a book called Diary of a Wimpy kid Rodrick Rules and there are a lot of problems in this book.First,Greg’s big brother Rodrick lies to his parents and said Greg did it and Rodrick gets away with it.But Greg is so tired of Rodrick.

Hi!I have just finished a book called Island of the Blue Dolphins!The main characters are:Karana an indian girl and her pet dog Rontu.Karana and Rontu live alone on an island.They survive by making hunting tools to get food.She also goes out on her conoe to fish.She makes tons of friends.I hope you will read this fantastic book!

I read a book called THE JOUNAL OF JESSE SMOKE. It’s a book about a Cherokee boy in Tennessee and has some bad things happen to him. Like his dad dies but I won’t tell you how he dies. But good things do happen . I think this book would be for people who like books about Indians .this book is realistic fiction .My favorite character is Jesse Smoke because he is brave. READ the book and tell me how you like it.

I am reading a book called Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett. In the beginning 3 certain people were sent a letter asking them to help someone anonymous identify a crime that is centuries old. It says,
“This crime has wronged one of the world’s greatest painters. As those in positions of authority are not brave enough to correct this error,I have taken it upon myself to reveal the truth.” Now, as I said, this person wants to remain anonymous. As I kept reading, I thought this book was boring and I thought I was going to abandon Chasing Vermeer. I read more of it and I found out that all the things that are happening are coming close to the things happening from a book called Lo! by Charles Fort, owned by Petra. Petra and her friend, Calder,thinks that isn’t a coincidence. I sorta think it is a coincidence.Do you think it is a coincidence or not?

I read a book called The Barking Ghost.It is an awsome book.The Author is R.L Stine.The genre would be fanisy,fiction,scary,mystriy.I recamend this book to people who like scary books.I chose this book because I liked and I thought you would to.My favorite charter is fergie because you can’t tell what she will do next.My favorite part is when Cooper scares his brother Mickey because he aways scares Cooper and know they scare him.The book is about this boy named Cooper who gets scared easyly and finds out the woods are haunted by two black dogs.Also Cooper meets this girl named Fergie and the two charters have to get rid of the two black dogs.

I have finished reading the book Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. This book is about a boy named Torak. There is a demon haunted bear that only Torak can defeat. While on his never ending quest, he learns some things about himself that make him very unique. If you like a book full of suspense and excitment, this book is for you!

Hey i have recently read Island of the blue dolphins. This is a book (for 4th graders) that you will be reading next year ( 5th grade). Karana, an indian girl gets stranded on an island with no one else. She ends up making friends with a wild dog and he becomes her pet. Karana has many different experiences with animals. Karana keeps animals so she will have company!This is an amazing book and I highly reccomend it!!

I have read the book Penny from Heaven. It’s about a 11 year old girl growing up in 1953. Her dad is dead and the two sides of the family don’t even talk to each other. Penny gets mad because her is mom is dating again. Some of the time she is with her mom and her family but other times she’s with her Italian family. Read the book to find out the rest!

I read this book called Letters from Wolfie by Pattie Sherlock. It is about this boy who decides to send his dog Wolfie to the Vietnam war. He decides to send Wolfie because they’re looking for German Sheperds and he has a German Sheperd. Also, his brother, Danny, went to the Vietnam war. You will have to find out if Wolfie and Danny come back safe or if they don’t come back at all.

I read the book Henry and the Paper route. It’s about a 10 year old boy who wants a paper route and can’t get one until he’s 11years old. He finally gets to do Scooter’s route for a week but still doesn’t have a paper route of his own. Then he goes through so many troubles it’s hard to believe! Read the rest of the book to find out what’s going to happen next!

i read the book Wringer. It is about a boy named Palmer. Palmer turns 10, but when you turn 10 you have to get the treatment. Palmer wants to be in this cool kid group. those are the kids he invited to his party. What Palmer finds out is that when he turns 10 he has to wring a pigion’s neck. he doesn’t like that because he secretly has a pet pigion. Will Palmer have to do it and forget about the pigion, or will he not wring the pigion’s neck?

I just started a book called eggs by Jerry Spinelli. It’s very interesting though I’m only on page nine. It starts out with a boy named David who is in a really bad mood and refused to make friends. Then his mom started to ask questions about him. He refused to be a human boy and instead wanted to be a moose. then another charcter is interduced named Pimrose. She finally got a room to herself and though it is small she seems compleatly crazy. One morning she woke up and saw that her house was egged. I have read other books by Jerry Spinnelli and there very intersting. I hope you choose to read the book eggs ar any others by Jerry Spinnelli.

I read a book named So B It. It is about a girl who has an autistic mother and her neighbor helps them out a lot. But when She finds dome pictures of her mom and who thinks is her grandmother, she tries to go to the place in the backround leaving her mother behind. She happens to have really really good luck, so she uses it to her advantige when she guesses the number of jellybeans in a jar for a free taxi ride. When she calls home wanting to come back, she finds out leaving wans’t the best choice after all. I would really recamend it to anyone! I think it is a book good for anyone and everyone!

Ali spends the summer with her aunt and cousin and meets a mean girl named Sissy. ali gets to know Sissy and solves an old mystery. In real life, people should take the time to listen to their friend and their enemies

I have read a book called Childen of the Lamp:the Akheaten Adventure.It is about twins,John and Philippa,who have strage things happening to them.1 stange thing that happened to them was that them got wisdom teeth at age 12.While they were having them pulled, their Uncle Nimrod appered in their dream.That motavated them to visit them during summer break.While they were there he told them shocking news.If I tell you it would ruin the story.Because that thing happened,they had to go on an Akheaten Adventure.

I have read so many books, and most of them were fairly decent. But there is one that really sticks out in my mind, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan was an amazing book that really drew me in by one thing, its chapter names! They were incredibly odd, including one that was ” I Accidently Vaporized my Pre-Algebra teacher”, but also, when it started talking about Percy’s ( the protagonist) harsh life (which was fairly early), that’s when i was hooked. He had lived a very awkward life, his father was unknown to him, and his mother married some guy named “Smelly” Gabe, he would gamble with his friends and Percy hated him. There are so many good plot twists in this book, it’s INCREDIBLE. For example, his dad has a dark secret that you will have to read to find out what! This book is followed by “The Sea of Monsters”

I read a book called Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park. It is about a girl named Julia and her friend named Patrick. They have to do a project on animal husbandry and they can’t think of a project. Percy Jackson and the lightning thief.
This is one of the best books I have ever read next to Harry Potter 7,Al Capone Does My Shirts, and the Alex Rider series. This book is about a boy that finds out that his father is Poseidon the greek god. There is about to be a war between the gods because Zeus thinks Hades or Poseidon has stolen his lightning bolt. Percy must go on a quest with his new friends from camp half blood to stop this. There are 4 other books in this series. I think you should read them ALL!
